The most controversial measure on our upcoming South Tahoe election is Measure T. If passed, nearly ALL vacation rentals within the city limits will be banned in three years. Such an outcome will cost our local economy more than 100 million dollars every year and more than 3 million for the city budget will be lost.
Surprisingly we have found that many folks in favor of this measure were led to believe that the yes vote would put stronger enforcement in place along with a cap on the number of allowed VHR permits. They had no idea that last year, South Lake Tahoe passed a strict law that already limits the number of short-term rentals. That cap has already been met and there will be no more. To obtain a permit, one must apply and wait in line for an opening.
Furthermore, fines are in place for owners and visitors in regards to noise, parking and trash violations. Although this new law is relatively new, it has already proven to be successful. We are also hearing that “there will be plenty of vacation destination opportunities” within the tourist corridor. The truth is, there are only about 18 homes that qualify as a vacation rental in the tourist corridor. The rest of the options are hotel rooms and luxury condominiums which are outside the average family budget. Today’s families want to stay in homes for their vacations. This trend is not unique to Lake Tahoe. Neither is the concern of controlling vacation rentals within residential neighborhoods. This is a concern world-wide and likewise, communities are working hard to come up with balanced solutions.
We all agree that it is important to work together toward a balance between a peaceful existence and a healthy economy. We strongly believe that our community can work together, each giving up a bit for the ultimate good of all. But, this measure to outright ban all VHR’s is way too extreme. Vote No on Measure T.
