This was the test. All winter long, Theresa and Don
Souers planned their course, practiced their whitewater
river skills and prepared for the canoe trip of their
dreams. Training in an intensive clinic with a master
guide, they focused on technique, teamwork and coordination.
Finally, the time for their adventure had come.

For endless, glorious days, Theresa and Don paddled
deeper and deeper into steep canyons topped by sentinel
peaks, ancient monuments whittled by millennial winds
and water and the occasional fury of a flash flood.
So far, the river had been gentle.
But not today. Brooding clouds on the horizon steadily
grew darker and closer, blackening with turbulence as
fresh winds blew across their faces. Soon, violent shafts
of lightening burst from the thunderheads, ricocheting
across the canyon walls in eerie booming echoes.
The river’s current rose against their canoe,
tossing the six hundred pound load of camping gear,
photographic equipment, and people like a leaf. Above
the roar of the rapids and storm, Theresa and Don shouted
directions at one another, mustering all their teamwork
skills to dodge unexpected obstacles, navigate the turbulent
current and avoid any misstep that might capsize crew
and canoe.
The storm lasted less than half an hour, but in that
time Theresa and Don’s teamwork skills were put
to the ultimate test, pulling through unharmed and with
renewed exhilaration and confidence.

High school sweethearts, Don and Theresa have been
a team throughout their adult lives. Having never previously
visited South Lake Tahoe, they found themselves new
residents due to a job transfer. Instantly Tahoe’s
pristine waters, superior lifestyle and abundant recreation
captivated them. They knew they were in the right place.
However, a few years later a promotion threatened
to take them away and they knew their life’s adventure
was about to take a turn. Abandoning job security for
quality of life, they chose to turn their teamwork skills

“At the time, we had two children who weren’t
far from going off to college,” Don says, “But
we knew that despite the job promotion, no other place
could offer our family Lake Tahoe’s quality of
life.”

we saw it,” Theresa agrees. “Our decision
came down to a family choice of lifestyle. Everyone,
including the kids, made the decision to make the necessary
sacrifices and keep Lake Tahoe as our permanent home.”
